Variations of this have been the next most common question and – unless you are booking more than six months in advance – the answer is probably no. This is the most in-demand period. The beach directly below us is pebbly rather than sandy, but it is quite lovely for a quiet, private dip. There are very nice public sandy swimming beaches a short coast-walk or drive towards either Opua or Paihia. How long does it take to walk from Opua to Paihia? The coastal walk to Opua takes 1/2 hour and the coastal walk to Paihia takes about 1 hour. Either way, you will do well to wear good walking shoes. You can pick up a few groceries from the general store in Opua and carry them back easily enough but it is recommended that you drive to Paihia for major shopping. The biggest supermarket is close to Waitangi, which would be a 1-1/2 hour walk from our house (or a 15-minute drive). We have a large trailer boat. What's the parking like? One of our two garages is available for guests and there is sufficient turnaround for an additional car in the driveway. There is also a public three-car parking spot outside the property and you could park additional vehicles there. Although we did not design the driveway for boats, it is possible that you could park a boat in the driveway if you did not mind parking your car(s) in the public carparking area on the street. The house is located at the tip of a peninsula between Opua and Paihia. It is about a ten-minute drive to Paihia and a five-minute drive to Opua. We are nestled in native bush and right over the water. Is there anything eco-friendly about this beautiful home, besides the heating and cooling (solar hot water heating, wet-back fireplace and heat-absorbing/releasing earth brick wall)? The house is incredibly eco-friendly, having been built to the specifications of eco-architect Graeme North – who is fairly much of a purist. No. If you have a dial-up service and bring your laptop, you can access the internet here (there are four phone jacks available), but otherwise you need to go into Opua or Paihia – where high-speed access is readily available. |
